- Step 1. Examine the box. - If it's too heavy to lift, get help or use a dolly.
- Step 2. Stance - Stand shoulder width apart with one foot slightly ahead of the other. This will help with proper balance while lifting.
- Step 3. Squat - Squat down as close to the box as possible, bending at the hips and knees only. Look straight ahead, chest out, shoulder back and keep your back straight.
- Step 4. Lift - Grip the box firmly with both hands and slowly lift by straightening your hips and knees. Use your legs to lift. Do not lift with your back. Do not twist as you lift. Make sure to keep good posture.
- Step 5. Holding - Hold the box as close to your body as possible at the level of your belly button. Try not to lift the box above your chest.
- Step 6. Moving - Move your feet to change directions. Move your whole body as one unit. Avoid twisting and turning your upper body while lifting, holding or moving.
- Step 7. Setting down - While placing the box down, squat with your knees and hips only, keeping your back as straight as possible. Then slowly stand up.
